Funding for the arts in public schools is being cut rapidly around the country. Children are growing up in environments where the importance of creative thinking and artistic expression are not encouraged. In some communities the art practice simply does not exist.

We feel that the little to no accessibility to experiencing art or the act of making art WILL have a detrimental effect on our society and on the psychological and emotional well-being of future generations.

As fine artists who were given the opportunity to grow up to become artists, and as activists who believe in social reform in a positive format, we have developed a new artform for ourselves. Our tool of expression is interaction and documentation. Our mission is to experience, and unify communities with one another as we assist in the fight for the importance of one of our most ancient and greatest survival skills; creativity.

Our country and it's education system is in a devastating state. It is our generation of artists, educators, thinkers, and believers to attempt to fight for today's youth and the future of art as we know it.

The Delivery Project

The Delivery Project is part of The Crow & The Wolf Project in which we distribute mason jars around the country charged with the soil of previous Crow & Wolf interactive installation exhibitions (SF & Oakland). Some have already been planted in, some have seeds, some are blank canvases. The first batch has been distributed in Oregon.

This side project will act as an invitation to people all over the country to become a part of the installation and research project we will be conducting in The Crow & The Wolf Project. YOU, the finder of the jar, are in control of the interaction and its continuation.

If you find a jar or receive one from a friend, there are 3 simple instructions:

1. Nurture it (Bury something in the jar!, plant in it, take it to parties, eat dinner with it, introduce it to your friends and family, etc). Be creative! These jars will become traveling time capsules of sorts. We anticipate the soil from one state traveling to the other side of the country and the traveling of your nurturing energy to one person to the next.

2. Take a photo of the jar/you with the jar and include the tracking number on the tag (see photo below) in the e-mail and send it to us at thedeliveryproject@gmail.com. There will be a blog entry for each tracking number. Therefore you can watch where the jar is traveling via our blog.

3. Pass the jar on (leave it in the park, mail it to someone you know or don't know, gift it to a friend)

By staying in touch with us you will be able to see where the jar travels and future recipients. You have total creative control, so have fun, make it yours while you have the jar and pass it on :)

ABOUT The Crow & The Wolf Project

From New Mexico to California to Oregon.... The Crow and The Wolf have evolved with our movement and activities in the places we have spent our developmental time. So for new friends and followers here is the revised mission:

ART + SCIENCE + ACTION = Social Sustainability

The Crow & The Wolf Project is a nationwide installation and research project that will travel for two years with the acquisition of an eco-friendly vehicle to work and collaborate with communities around the United States.

Our focus is social sustainability and the education of a balance between environmental sustainability with psychological and emotional (human) sustainability. In order to have one, we must have the other. We hypothesize that our tool (an art making and installation platform combining expressive therapy and bilateral stimulation) will be a successful way for us to revisit our natural creative and expressive language as humans in order to collaborate on sustainable solutions as a nation.

Through the project we intend to:

a. reconnect communities and individuals with the natural way of communicating; art-making. Over time we have lost touch with our expressive intuition (technology, art education budget cuts, etc). It is of great importance to bring back the creative influence to communities around the US.

b. share solutions and learn more about preexisting initiatives within communities around our country who are forward thinkers, eager to communicate their group's/community's sustainable practices. We feel very strongly that there is someone or a group of individuals in EVERY community who feels passionate about sustainable options but may have trouble communicating their alternative concepts to their neighbors.

c. collaborate with groups and individuals in the use of our interactive platform to assist in their communication. Our proposed platform is an experimental concept combing expressive art therapy techniques and bilateral stimulation.

Expressive therapy: the practice of using imagery, storytelling, dance, music, drama, poetry, movement, dream-work, and visual arts in an integrated way, to foster human growth, development and healing. It is about reclaiming our innate capacity as human beings for creative expression of our individual and collective human experience in artistic form. Expressive arts therapy is also about experiencing the natural capacity of creative expression and creative community for healing.

Bilateral Stimulation: immersing the senses to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain in order to activate and integrate information.

d. document the human and community responses to our installations and interactions in both an academic, physical and creative manner. Throughout the two years of our field study we will document the positive and negative human reactions to our concept in order to determine if our hypothesis that the creative and art therapy influence on communication of sustainability has the strong and positive affect we anticipate. Artistically and physically, the communities we engage with will assist in a tangible final product, a book. Each location visited will have its own page on our website that can be shared with others and revisited by everyone involved.

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans, it is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which in turn depends on the well being of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources.

"Kokoro Studio: Spir·akasha - The Crow and The Wolf.

Review by Kristin Farr: Female duo The Crow and The Wolf present an elaborate installation including taxidermy, jars of dirt, antique furniture, a paper puppet theater, a haiku tree, and a meditative sound room. Really nice attention to detail and participatory elements-- the sound room installation features three sets of headphones playing specially commissioned ambient beats. The show is like a traveling circus from another land; there is much to be explored. The artists even decorated Kokoro's fancy chandelier with tiny skulls. Spir·akasha shows a lot of dedication to space transformation and it will continue to evolve during its run.

Comment by RWM: Gothic and stylish. Thought provoking, but not all worrisome. There is a message here for those who would or might listen.

The Crow & The Wolf's first solo exhibition, Spir·akasha, will be on view at Kokoro Studios (682 Geary Street at Leavenworth) from March 4th- March 27th. Join us for the opening filled with interactive art, sound installations by Gavin Elder and Adam Finken (who will also be performing live), food & beverages on the 4t...h, from 7-10pm. (The opening is a part of San Francisco's monthly First Thursday event, where participating galleries are open all evening throughout the city).

The exhibition is an installation which will evolve throughout the month it is in the gallery with the help of collaborating artists and friends. We will be holding events each week within the space that will be open to the public to participate in, so follow our blog for details.

The exhibition at RPS was a success! Everyone's participation in the exhibition itself will be a part of our next show in March. The exercise visitors performed within the space (the depositing of words and burial in the cocoons) have been jarred and will be included in a 'growing' element of our next installation (Which also happens to be our first solo show!) at Kokoro Studio gallery here in San Francisco! Those of you who are local, stay in touch. The show in March, entitled Spir*ashaka, will be a month long evolving installation. We will be collaborating with various local artists and you all will be invited to participate in gatherings each week!

Social Structures Exhibition Opening!

This past Friday, November 6th, The Crow & The Wolf featured an installation in the exhibition, Social Structures, at the Rock Paper Scissors Collective in Oakland. This was a part of Art Murmur, Oakland's First Friday citywide gallery opening event.
The month long show will be up for a month, the gallery operating Wednesday- Sunday 12-7.

The installation is an example to the public, of the the aesthetics and environment that will exist within the future house.

Hey Everyone!

The Masquerade on June 25th at 111 Minna was a complete success! We had an amazing turn out and flattering responses. Everyone's masks were fabulous and we were happy to see so many people participate and come out & support us!

The bands were amazing and we greatly thank them all, Vows, Cave Country, Fourteenth Floor & Daniel James.

And of course our DJs Cat Fancy & Matt Bonar deserve a huge thank you! As always, they provided us with fun & great music :)

In addition to all of the new friends and supporters we made, we also had quite the fund-raising success! We are happy to say that with the help of everyone who attended we raised enough money ........

to completely build the house!!!!!!!!

This is a huge aid in the projects development, since once the house is completed we will be out in San Francisco and beyond conducting projects...and then departing on our countrywide journey. The finished house is such an important step for us, and you all were a part of it :)

We thank you from the bottom of our crow & wolf hearts.

Thanks to Buck Minitch, we have begun to build the house!!!

With it's mission to be a green structure, some of our designs have evolved, one of which is the siding of the house.

In collaboration with Buck, we have decided to formulate a siding on the house that will be constructed from cans.

....we will need a lot of cans.....
hundreds....thousands......

So if you are in the Bay Area, and would like to set aside your uncrushed cans for us, we can come pick them up! Please let us know!

About

For art to be a tool to make changes in society, it must be applied.

The Crow and The Wolf is a conceptual community arts initiative that will begin in San Francisco and, from there, travel around the United States entering communities for the maximum of one month at a time before traveling to the next. The initiative incorporates a house-like structure constructed out of all green materials, with the help from San Diego green contractor & founder of Green Vision, Buck Minitch. As the foundation of the exhibition, the house will integrate traditional and interactive works of our own, as well as act as an exhibition space and the home base for community projects that will be specifically designed for each location based on their history and current art community or lack there of. The environment within the house will be created to stimulate all of the senses. Inspired by the concept of Bilateral Stimulation, every element of the structure will immerse the senses to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain in order to activate and integrate information.

In a time when our society is weakened by disconnect, our initiative will enter communities with the intention of reestablishing a peaceful conversation and inspire the act of educating one another. We will use creative expression & collaboration to expose people to new situations and ideas within their own environments. To serve the communities, we will offer them the experience of witnessing an alternative notion of what art is by inviting them to contribute and make it their own. By breaking down the barriers between the art world and community art, we plan to remind people that art is a natural form of expression, as well as a positive and progressive way to communicate and unite.

Goals

- Develop a dialog between community partners and artists.

- Break away from the formalities of a gallery setting and exhibit in
alternative spaces and within nature.

- Engage in making art as a community.

- Promote a positive outlet for the individuals we encounter to
communicate through art.

- Unite communities with one another who may or may not ever
meet whether it is due to geographical location or choice.

- Expose and embrace our differences in order to open and
strengthen the communication between us all.

- Promote the idea that making changes in the way we interact and
pursuing an alternative way of thinking is exactly what we need
right now in the art world and in society.

- Encourage the natural relationship that is formed between
humanity and creative expression, through community art
making.

Our plan is to unite a variety of communities throughout the country. We will choose our destinations based on established networks and invitations we have already received and will develop with individuals, organizations, and communities who wish to collaborate. In order to integrate diverse participants, we choose to visit cities and towns of all sizes, not limited to those with established art communities.

The Artists’ Mission

This project will push us from simply being image-makers to visual communicators for the public. Our interactive journey will offer us the experience and knowledge of the diversity amongst people to teach ourselves how to successfully communicate and educate the public.

By conducting our own personal research and artistic experimentation within each community, we will be documenting human behavior in response to art and community interaction. The results will provide us with an analysis of how art can be a successful aid in unification. As aspiring educators and leaders who use art as a tool for change, the greater the understanding of our fellow citizens, the stronger influence we can have through our art.

The knowledge and growth we will gain as a result of this project will be vital for us to follow through with our goal to maintain the unification we establish amongst communities, and have The Crow and The Wolf evolve into a national community arts non-profit organization.

We are in the process of seeking funding, applying for grant opportunities and developing fund-raisers, however anything YOU can do to help us would be greatly appreciated. One of the projects we are conducting that will result in a final piece within the house is a sound installation.

We are looking for musicians who would be interested in collaborating with us.

Idea:

We would like to take traditional and normal sounds you would find within a house ( water dripping into tin can, creaking of doors, foot steps, buzzing of refrigerator, etc), and have musicians of all kinds take that sound and manipulate it within their own style of musical/artistic expression.

We hope for the final sound clips to maintain the original sound slightly, so it is still somewhat recognizable, but otherwise the musician has complete creative control of how they want to portray it.

Your sound pieces would be a part of an interactive sound installation that will help us to create an atmosphere within the space.

If you are interested in recording house sounds, or have sound clips of house noises you would like to share with us, that would be a great help too!!

The Crow and the Wolf are two graduates of MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) who have taken on the roles of missionaries of alternative thinking.

The idea for The Crow and The Wolf project resulted from a personal journey they took together throughout the Southwestern part of the United States after disconnecting themselves, geographically, from everything they once knew.

This experience helped them to re-evaluate their roles as artists and members of society, and inspired them to embrace and encourage positive change by using their art as a tool to share and connect with communities around the country.
